Age Spots on Face

Age spots on face can be very distressing especially for most women but these spots are not necessarily caused by aging. Oftentimes, they are called liver spots which are usually brown, red, gray, or black and may vary in size. But it is definitely not true that these spots are caused by liver problems.

Age spots are very common on adults at the age of 40 and above and they are usually harmless. But in some instances, these spots can be cancerous which is why before turning to the use of over the counter treatments and creams, you should consult a dermatologist first.

Causes of Age Spots on Face

• Age – Though age is not really related to age spots on face but age spots are more common on older men and women. This is because as we age our skin becomes more and more prone to damages caused by the sun and other factors.

• Sun Damage – Sunlight is very good for the skin but prolonged exposure can lead to skin damages. When exposed to too much ultraviolent rays, the pigment level will increase its deposits on the skin cells which cause formation of skin lesions and creating a tan color. But getting a tan is not healthy as it is an indication that you are suffering from skin damage which also leads to other skin problems such as freckles and wrinkles. • Acne and scars – It’s natural for both men and women to go through pimples and acnes at some point of their lives. But when these pimples are not treated well, they may leave scars or marks on the skin. It’s a good thing that acne scars can now easily be removed through special skin treatments.

• Hormonal Imbalance – Sad to say, women are more prone to age spots because they mainly go through a lot of hormonal changes especially when they’re pregnant or on menopause.

• Medical condition – Though it rarely occurs, age spots can also be caused by a serious medical condition or can be result of a nutritional deficiency.

Risk Factors

Age spots are very common and can affect both men and women, but individuals who are more prone to this condition are those who have fair or light colored skin and those who frequently expose themselves to the sun.

Treatments for Age Spots on Face

Medical treatments

The most effective treatment for age spots is laser treatment which can be a bit pricey. Another method is called cryosurgery that freezes and destroys the abnormal skin cells. Other treatments include chemical peeling, microdermabrasion, and use of bleaching agents and creams.

Natural treatment for age spots on face

Unlike medical treatments, natural treatments can go for as long as weeks or months before effects become visible. Here are a few of them.

o For small types of age spots, dab cotton soaked with lemon juice for at least twice a day.

o Take more vitamin E.

o Mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and onion juice and wipe on the affected area.

o Apply watermelon peels on the affected area.

o Apply aloe vera on the spots daily.

It’s definitely impossible to avoid age spots on face considering the causes stated above. But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do about it. If you go out in the sun then protect your face from the sun’s UV rays by wearing a sunscreen or wearing a cap.
