Allergy Eye Swelling: Remedies for Swollen Eyes


Allergy eye swelling is a reaction to certain factors such as pollen, bacteria or medication. The eyes swell and become extremely sensitive to the touch, it can be painful and oftentimes annoying. Since it will become extremely sensitive, it is essentially important to minimize the swelling and contain it. Commonly, people with eye swelling prefer to treat themselves rather than go to their doctor.  But unless you know what you are doing, you should seek medical attention or the swelling may get worse and even lead to infection. Conditions that should alert you to seek medical help include extreme redness of the eye/s with pain and/or discharge.

REMEDIES FOR ALLERGY EYE SWELLING

Compresses

Grab a clean cloth and wrap it around an ice or a bag of it and hold it in place over the swollen eye in order to lessen the swelling. If there is no ice available, get some cold water and soak the clean cloth in it. Drain the water off from the cloth and place it on top of the swollen eye as this will help lessen the inflammation

Make one cup of tea from 2 chamomile tea bags. When the tea bags have already cooled down, place the bag over each swollen eye and hold it in place for about 5 to 10 minutes. Repeat this procedure 2 – 3 times per day or until the swelling disappears.

Rinse the swollen eyes with cool and clean water in order to halt the irritation and diminish the swelling. Prepare rose water (which you can find in an herb shop) and put 4 drops of it in the swollen eyes. Shut your eyes after that for about 5 to 10 minutes. Rose water is considered a remedy that you can prepare at home, and has been practiced for generations to cure the swelling and the irritation. Continue the drops for about 3 times per day. The irritation and swelling should vanish after 2 to 3 days.

Oral Antihistamines

Antihistamine medicines help prevent allergy from spreading and cause more irritation and swelling. Histamine is the chemical responsible for causing allergy such as swelling or irritation of the eyes or sneezing. Antihistamine tablets are available over-the-counter or you can ask your doctor for a prescription. Try to be careful when choosing your own antihistamine medicine because there are some that will cause you to sleep for longer hours or result to severe drowsiness. This is sometimes considered as a last resort for people suffering from an allergy.

PREVENTION

If you are easily affected with allergy or are prone to getting them, it is recommended that you wear a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from foreign particles when you are outdoors or facing the bright light. When your eyes feel itchy, do not rub them vigorously with the use of your fingers or dusty towels as this will cause more irritation. Instead flush your eyes with running, cool water. To limit the strain on your eyes, limit your TV time or computer work. When you are reading, go to a place that is well lit. Eat foods that are rich in protein, calcium and iron in order to strengthen the immune system and lessen the chances of acquiring allergy eye swelling.
