There are a number of women who experience brown period blood or a brown discharge after period. Many women are worried over this but the fact is this is not necessarily indicative of a more serious condition. Some women experience brown period blood even if they are perfectly healthy. One should know about the causes and know its treatments to ease worries.

CAUSES

Brown period blood can be due to a late period which is characterized by dark-colored discharge; ranging from brown, dark red to dark brown. This can be observed during or after the period. Endometrial tissues that give way for menstrual bleeding are the usual cause for brown discharge after period. When the older tissues are replaced by new ones, the older tissues are cleansed out of the uterus, which manifest themselves as brown discharge.

There are times, however, when the brown discharge after period is a symptom of damage in the reproductive. There are a variety of causes, such as polyps, erosion or injury at the surface or at the opening of the uterus. More examination is needed to confirm the specific cause. Meanwhile, if the brown discharge happens after three to four weeks from the last period, it can be an early indication of pregnancy or implantation bleeding.

Brown period blood can also mean serious underlying conditions like pelvic inflammatory disease, cervical cancer, bacterial vaginosis or certain STDs such as vaginal warts or Chlamydia. For older women, it can also be a sign of the different phases of the menstrual cycle such as menopause and perimenopause.

TREATMENT

Treatment is not immediately done after just one observation. One should first observe and note the nature and how long the brown discharge lasts. Based on the aforementioned nature and causes of brown discharge after period, you can deduce if you really need to see your Gynecologist. Doctors perform different tests in order to identify the cause of the brown discharge.

If the root cause is serious, brown discharge maybe coupled with other symptoms like vaginal dryness, itching, skin rash, frequent urination, burning sensation or mood swings. If such is the case, it is then recommended to seek medical attention. You should be upfront and honest with your doctor in describing the symptoms you have so that appropriate treatment can commence.

Brown period blood or brown discharge after period is in itself, generally, not a cause for concern. However, if you experience other symptoms, it is best to consult your doctor to avoid any possible complications.
