IBS symptoms are usually witnessed in people with high stress levels and inadequate diet. IBS is a common intestinal problem, in which the intestine constrict the food too hard or too soft in such a manner that the food moves either too fast or too slowly through the intestines. IBS is commonly noticed in women, especially after they attain 20 years of age. One in every five adults are diagnosed with IBS.

Here are a few IBS symptoms:

Gas and bloating

Constipation

Diarrhoea

Mucous in the motion

IBS symptoms become worse especially when you are under stress or undertaking a hectic activity. Working long hours or in shifts like night shifts or grave-yard shifts can make your IBS worse. IBS is mostly the reason of eating the wrong type of food or eating a heavy meal. Women with IBS witness uncomfortability during their menstrual period.

How to Diagnose IBS

The doctor begins to diagnose IBS by asking you about the symptoms of the disease, the frequency and the pattern of your bowel movements. If there is a definite pattern witnessed, it is evident to the doctor that IBS is the culprit. Ideally the doctor will conduct a blood test or colonoscopy to ensure that the IBS symptom is not due to problems other than IBS.

IBS causing food

IBS is not the result of food. But then there are some food that can lead to worsening of IBS. Food that is rich in caffeine or fat can increase IBS problems. Due to coffee or oily food, the intestinal muscles contract leading to a cramping, gassy feeling. Chocolate may be most women’s first love, but then chocolate can also increase IBS. Alcohol can make your IBS worse.

IBS gas

Avoid food that can create gas in the gut. Vegetables like cabbage, beans, broccoli are gas causing and IBS causing food. Though these food commonly cause gas, every individual’s system and response to various food differs. Hence, it is a good practice to keep a diary of the food that you eat and find out exactly what kind of food is giving you trouble and IBS. Only leave out food if they give you digestive problems more than once.

If milk products and milk cause you IBS, diarrhea or constipation, then it may be that you are suffering from lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance is a problem when your body is not able to digest the sugar in milk or lactose. IBS symptoms increase if your digestive system is lactose intolerant.
