Some tests may require the patient to fast for up to 12 hours, in which water is only permitted, before a blood sample is drawn from the vein of the patient’s arm. People with high levels of iron are treated by regular bloodletting or phlebotomies. Depending on the extent of the problem, phlebotomies might be done once a week; every other month or every three months until the level of iron has is within the normal limits.
